The Providence community is mourning after a tragic two-vehicle crash on State Route 165 that claimed two young lives and left several others critically injured late Saturday evening. Utah Highway Patrol reports that the collision occurred shortly after 7 p.m. when a northbound Toyota Corolla lost control, crossed the center line, and struck a southbound Toyota Sienna minivan.
Seventeen-year-old CJ Fiefia of Avon, the driver of the Corolla, died at the scene. Fourteen-year-old passenger Xylie Hutchinson of Hyrum was transported to the hospital but sadly passed away from her injuries. Three additional teenagers in the Corolla suffered critical injuries, with one airlifted for emergency treatment.
The Sienna was carrying two adults and three children, all of whom sustained only minor injuries and received care at a nearby hospital. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash, with speed currently being considered. Multiple agencies, including Logan Police, Logan Fire, and the Cache County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the scene. The loss of Xylie Hutchinson has deeply impacted the Cache Valley and Utah hockey communities.
UAHA shared heartfelt condolences, remembering Xylie as a dedicated member of UHSH Cache Valley Varsity & JV and Girls North Varsity. Her love for hockey began in local youth leagues, and she proudly played in the inaugural season of Team Utah. Coaches, teammates, friends, and family describe her as a bright, joyful presence whose kindness touched everyone around her. As loved ones grieve both CJ and Xylie, the community continues to offer prayers, support, and compassion. Their memories—full of warmth, laughter, and love—will be forever cherished.
